A New Beginning

Lately my vision has been unclear, and for a while now, it's been making me anxious. Not my physical vision, but my soul vision, the deeper calling from within. I couldn't hear it, or see it, or feel it, and I felt paralyzed not knowing where to place my time and attention, for fear that my calling might be "over there" (anywhere but here).

Self Love

Photo: Jonathan Lichtfield

When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2011, I got surprisingly little advice on how to deal with the card I had been dealt. The big C is so loaded with fear, that people freeze in it's wake, forgetting that it doesn't have to leak into every dimension of life. Also, seeing as I wasn't even 30 when I got the news, I didn't know very many people my age that could relate or offer many words of wisdom, or even practical advice on how to go through it with a shred of grace and ease.

Practice Living

This weekend I received an amazing gift: One of the best hugs I have ever experienced. I felt so supported, held and loved as my dear friend Christine Price Clark wrapped her arms around me fully, held my chest close to hers and affectionately squeezed me deeply. Afterwards I told her what a great hugger she is. "I consciously practice giving good hugs " she revealed.

Hugging as a practice? It had never occurred to me.

Your body is a mud hut

On my way to my 6 month follow up with my oncologist yesterday (all clear by the way!), The Province newspaper headline caught my eye. "100 is the new 85", it read, with a picture of a sweet 100 year old man holding a tennis racquet, happy as can be.

Live Everything

It is indeed a daily practice to be present, live in the moment, and be here now. I often find myself torn between living in the now, listening to my heart, trying to decode it's enigmatic language so I may know, when faced with life's daily choices, what course to choose. In an effort to get clear on what I want the outcome to be, or how I want my life to look, I stress trying to figure out what the answer will be before giving life a chance to live it out through me.

Flowing Presence

A dear friend and I recently discussed what it means to go with the flow. There are many flows with which one can align, we agreed; that of the status quo, making decisions based on what you think you should be doing, compared to what others are choosing, or, move from the deeper current that reveals itself fully the more you pay attention.

Bloom

"How strange that the nature of life is change, yet the nature of human beings is to resist change. And how ironic that the difficult times we fear might ruin us, are the very ones that can break us open and help us blossom into who we were meant to be."

Taking Flight

Living through a cancer diagnosis is a journey weighted with fear. I noticed how much fear I was harbouring after hearing I would need radiation. If I don't do it, will it come back? If I do it, will I develop a secondary cancer later in life? Am I screwed either way?!? Fear fear fear fear fear... My mind was consumed with toughts of the worst possible outcome and all I wanted was a gurantee that once this was over and done with, I would be happy and healthy for the rest of my life.

A Grateful Update

After a lengthy hiatus, I am re-inspired to write. Following my last entry, the chemotherapy treatments really started to take a toll on my body and mind. Creativity was not flowing freely so instead of resisting the dullness, I chose to retreat inward, became cocoon-like and took refuge in the space inside.

Choose to welcome change

The nature of the world of name and form that we perceive through our senses is that it is always changing. Change is synonymous with uncertainty, and uncertainty is uncomfortable, for every change implies some loss. The only way to overcome fear is to get in touch with something that is beyond change. And the only thing beyond change is the field of intelligence, of spirit, which is the basis of change.
